After a slightly depressing set of Lent Bumps results, the THBC men were keen to emulate the recent success of the women at the Women's Head of the River Race and despite having nearly two complete weeks off the water before the race we were feeling optimistic. The conditions were near perfect, and watching the top crews start is enough to raise the hairs on the neck of the most hardened rower.
Unfortunately Clare College, who were scheduled to chase us off the start line, had scratched so we started with King's College in front (who we have encountered earlier in the year) and LEA II behind. LEA started very close (4 seconds behind) and pushed us hard through the first section of the race. We did our best to keep them off and made their overtake difficult, but finally let them through as we came past the Chiswick Eyot. Heads started to dip after this and legs got tired and we couldn't quite finish the overtake on KCL, whom we had caught.
Overall, we came 12th college crew out of 19 - a disappointing end to the term, though something to work off for the Mays. We were still in the action with respect to times, so we just need to get that bit more speed and fitness and we will be able to come in at the top of the pack, rather than the bottom.
