Men's 1st VIII

161st in a time of 19:28.69. 8th in Senior 4. 15th in Halliday Trophy.

After a successful Lent term, THBC M1 came to the tideway looking to finish it off in style. Unfortuantely other commitments meant that two of our blades winning crew had to sit out the HORR, many thanks to Dave Lock and Joe Metcalfe for subbing in.
The day couldn't have been much better for racing, glorious sunshine and a light breeze making for almost perfect conditions, if only the tideway was always like this!
Going off at 340 as a new entry meant a long wait in the marshalling area watching the higher crews (including the TSS "great eight" of Olympic scullers) race past and trying to get the measure of the crews around us. Eventually the time came to race and we produced a strong build to 34, initially holding the crew in front (who eventually pulled away) and moving away from Worcester College, Oxford behind. We settled well to our race pace of 30 1/2 and quickly started making gains on some crews ahead. Before long we had overtaken one of them (St. Andrew) with a strong push and quickly ate up the distance to the next (Swansea University I) on the way towards Hammersmith bridge. They put in a brave effort to hold us off and we raced side by side for some time, but we kept to our rhythm and were too strong for them, moving clear ahead as we came past Harrods. By this point legs and lungs were starting to tire, but we maintained our technique and focus and the long ergs we've been doing all term started to pay off as we made a push for the finish. There was time to overtake one more crew (Exeter) on the final stretch and we crossed the line at Putney to record a time of 19:28.69, with Worcester trailing a long way behind. This placed us 161st overall, 8th in Senior 4, 15th in the Halliday Trophy (for University/College crews of S2 status or below) and 4th of the 23 Cambridge College crews entered. We also finished ahead of all but one of the 13 Oxford College boats. A good result and a fitting way to round off a fantastic term's rowing. Bring on next term!
